How To Conduct A Basic SEO Audit And When To Seek Help?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) should be a part of any company’s marketing strategy. However, even if you are doing well with it, there will always be competition striving to get ahead of you. Not only that, but search engine algorithms are constantly being updated and evolving. That means that what is working for you right now may not work for you next month. Or worse, what worked last month is already no longer working. 

That’s why an SEO audit is such a valuable task. You can get an accurate gauge of how you are performing when it comes to SEO. You can then take action to improve what needs improving so that you can stay ahead of the competition and in line with what search engines are looking for. Luckily, the process doesn’t have to be difficult. However, there may be instances when you need to reach out for help from a professional to have something audited correctly. 

What is an SEO Audit, Anyway?

An SEO audit should be conducted at the very least once a year, but it’s better if it’s done every 6 months. It’s the process of examining every aspect of your website to make sure that it is properly optimized and working at its best to increase your search engine rankings (SERPS). It’s usually best to take a checklist approach to make sure that you properly examine each factor. 

Step 1: Crawl Your Website

Your website exists in cyberspace, so you can’t actually crawl on it, but you can start a website crawl. A website crawl is a process of checking your website for any issues that might be affecting your SEO performance. This can include posts that have inadequate word counts, duplicate content, and other problems with your pages and posts. There are many tools out there to run this diagnostic for you, so you should be able to do it on your own. Depending on the tool you use, you can also get an audit of your links and backlinks to make sure they are from and to authoritative sources.

Step 2: Make Sure Your Website is Being Properly Indexed

If your website is not being indexed by Google, then you won’t get a ranking whatsoever. If there are problems with indexing your site, it will absolutely put a damper on where you show up on SERPs. You can use the Google Search Console to check your website and all of its pages to see which pages are indexed and if any are missing. If they are not indexed, then that would indicate there is an issue. In some cases, it may be because of a penalty from Google, and in others, it’s a coding issue. Whatever the reason, you can now identify and fix it right away. If you are not an expert with coding or SEO, then this is definitely something that is worth hiring a professional to help with. 

Step 3: Audit Your Link Portfolio

Links, both internal and external, are a crucial part of your SEO strategy. However, as time goes on and website pages get deleted or moved, links can become broken and therefore not useful to you. There are web and SEO tools for laravel and other CMSs available to give you a breakdown of all of your links and whether you have broken ones. If you do, you will need to rebuild your links to keep your SEO results high. 

This may be something that is better left to a link-building company. They will know exactly how to re-build your portfolio and get all of your links working for you again. Link-building takes time, effort, and a strategy, so if you don’t have the time or the wherewithal, hiring help is your best bet. 

There’s also tremendous value in completing a competitor backlink analysis to see what your highest-performing competitors are doing. You can use the insight from those findings to strategize which link opportunities to pursue.

Audit Your Site Speed

Having a website with fast-loading pages improves the customer experience immeasurably. It also helps with your SEO. If your page loads slowly, then most likely you will have a high bounce rate. Your bounce rate is a measure of how fast visitors click away from a page or a website. If your bounce rate is high, then search engines will identify that and assume that there is an issue with your page that visitors do not like. Your rankings will suffer as a result. The average bounce rate is between 25 to 40%, so at the very least you want to be in that neighborhood. 

To audit your page loading speed, you can use one of the many tools available on the web. In many cases, the issues have to do with images and videos that are too big. A lot also depends on website hosting, so make sure everything goes well with it, too. By optimizing those elements that are causing the problems, your speed will improve and your rankings will along with it. 

Check Your Performance on SERPs

Another step that takes some time is to analyze how you are performing on the SERPs for some of your keywords. Using analytics tools from the web, you can see which search terms are bringing you the most traffic, at which times of day, and even which times of the year. If you have a page or more that seems to be underperforming, you can compare them to the successful ones to see what might be missing. 

Some of these tools will also tell you how you’ve been progressing in the rankings for certain keywords over time. You can accurately gauge how well your pages have been doing. If they’ve been declining, you can update them so that they can point you in the right direction again. 

Identify Any Gaps in Content

Since SEO is a competitive practice, you want to compare your content with that of your competitors. That way you can identify what is missing from your content that is helping your competitors on SERPs. The key is identifying which other businesses you consider to be your closest competitors and setting up an audit of their sites using web tools such as Ahrefs Site Explorer. It will bring up a list of websites that have a high number of matching keywords to your website. 

Then, you can use the tool to search those websites and see which keywords are also bringing them traffic. If there are ones that you are not using, you can update your old content or create new content using those keywords. 

Delete or Update Old Content

They say that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and the same goes for your website. Take a look at your underperforming pages. They are no doubt bringing you down in the overall grand scheme of things. You have two choices: you can update a page, or you can delete it entirely. The best option is usually to improve the page, by improving the quality of content with content writing services, but there may be times when it’s worth it just to cut bait and point the URL towards a relevant page.
